Testimonials

On my public speaking and engagement:

Daniel’s keynote speech at our AGM Conference was very well received by the participants and generated a lot of interest. Almost every hand went up in the Q&A! Nuclear disarmament is often discussed in the context of international treaties, politics, ethical theories and so on, but Dan opened our eyes to an aspect which is arguably much more important: the stories we tell about nuclear weapons, both to ourselves and to others. His whistle-stop tour of the literature and film of the nuclear age revealed just how much has changed in the way that we explain and interpret our world and our lives.

Despite his evident scholarship and expertise, Dan was entirely approachable and very good to work with, showing interest in our work just as we showed it in his.

On my research and collaboration:

[Dan’s research] evidences [his] reputation in the field and his strong ability to bring together different groups to work together in innovative and collaborative ways to further knowledge and understanding around nuclear literature. An important aspect of research at NTU is including local communities and Dan has managed to achieve this very effectively … bringing together creative writers with local organisations and businesses.

On my teaching:

[T]he sessions [for the course, On Page and Screen: Adaptations of Literature in Recent Film] ran very well indeed. [Dan’s] teaching style is warm, engaging and inclusive. The quality of content and resources was exceptional, and it was clear a great deal of time and effort went into them.

As usual, Dan’s modules receive the very highest feedback from students and [he demonstrates] excellence in teaching, guiding reading, and enthusing students not only in his specialist final-year module, but also in all modules [in which] he is involved.

This year, Dan’s module received specific positive feedback from the external examiner, rating it very highly indeed and recommending his methods and module to the highest level. … Dan always spends great time and effort in producing excellent teaching material.

Professor Natalie Braber, line manager apprasial, Nottingham Trent University (2024)

This module … opens [up a specialist topic] to much broader significance, addressing timely global concerns.

Throughout, the written materials were impressively thoughtful. The Module Guide was clear and appealing. The Module Lead clearly communicated proactively via [the online learning portal] NOW, and was committed to fostering a supportive environment … I took notes on how to write module materials myself!

A demonstrable link between teaching and research practice was also outlined, and I liked the clear engagement with workplace skills.

The best final essays were impressively original, offering sustained analysis of a range of texts and theoretical approaches. … Feedback gives a strong sense of the Module Lead knowing the students and is generally encouraging.
